Highlights from the Fall 2009 Meeting in Boise, Idaho
Graciously hosted by ISHS at the Idaho History Center & Archives
Dear Idaho Archaeology Colleagues:
Thank you all who attended the Fall 2009 meeting, making it a success. The majority of the meeting was intended to focus on current curation issues in Idaho, and I heartily thank those from the Archaeological Survey of Idaho (ASI) for presenting on the topics of their respective regional repositories.
I would also like to welcome and express my appreciation for their service as executive Board Members, Jan Summers Duffy as new Secretary, and standing for an additional term as Vice President, David Valentine. (I also wish Stan McDonald a fond farewell as former Secretary and as he settles into his new position in Oregon). Although Jan and David received the support of the membership when accepting their posts during the meeting, By-laws required a ballot be sent to “members in good standing” (those current on their dues); at the end of the year, the IPAC board confirmed a majority vote in favor of these candidates from ballots received back from those sent to all qualifying members.
Many members also stepped forward at the Fall 2009 meeting to form a group to deliberate how IPAC can best support establishment of requirements for the preservation of archaeological resources on State of Idaho lands. In 2010, we expect to increase our activity on this topic.
Others have volunteered to again take up the review of a potential IPAC Code of Ethics. We have picked up the draft points assembled by a few of IPAC’s founding group in 2004, and will be considering how to build from that code for current IPAC needs and for renewed pondering of the issues by the full membership.
Many of these matters will be taken up again at the 2010 meeting. No need to wait, however. Since the IPAC-list has been established and many signed up for it, discourse can proceed via that group email system at any time, vigorously, during the interim.
Finally, we have recognized Dr. Roderick Sprague’s service and contributions to Idaho Archaeology. He was confirmed with an IPAC fellowship through majority vote at the Fall 2009 meeting.
Best to all Idaho Archaeologists in 2010, and see you at this year’s meeting (location and date yet to be determined).
Sincerely, Scott Phillips IPAC President
